Just saw my dear friend Simeon Tsonchev (aka Simbad)’s new natural history doc Flying Away and felt like getting a ticket and flying back home… The film shows up close encounters with some of the endangered bird species which have found refugee in the most distant parts of Bulgaria like the Rhodope and Sakar Mountains, Tyulenovo, Durankulak and the Belogradchik Rocks. I can only imagine what it took to capture some of these rare birds but the result is stunning: Red-breasted Geese, Long-legged Buzzards, the impressive Egyptian Vulture, Imperial Eagles and Pelicans all in their safe and beautiful natural environment.
Bulgaria is home of over 400 species of wild birds and has one of the highest biodiversity numbers in Europe. Being one of the least nationalistic people on earth, this really makes me proud!
Expect Flying Away at film festivals near you and on TV soon. For more on Simbad’s work visit monocollective.com.
